Strip-mall labs use HPLC - which only measures UV absorption. It cannot tell the difference between compounds that share the same molecular weight.
Real example: Enclomiphene and Clomiphene are isomers with identical molecular weights. HPLC sees them as the same compound. LC-MS/MS uses mass fragmentation patterns - a molecular "fingerprint" - to distinguish them definitively.
